Government Hospital of Thoracic Medicine was inaugurated as Tuberculosis Sanatorium on 12.02.1960 by then Chief Minister of Government of Madras, Thiru. K. Kamaraj in the presence of then Minister for Health, Government of Madras, Thiru. M.A. Manickavelu.
Patients with Pulmonary Tuberculosis from Madurai and Surrounding districts who require inpatient management are admitted here. They are provided with antituberculous treatment as per NTEP guidelines. In addition they are provided with high protein nutritious diet. To improve the mental health of patients, innovative measures like library, indoor games, Television sets and FM radios have been created. Rehabilitation measures like yoga training, musical therapy and vocational training are provided to patients and their family members.
The campus also has Infectious Diseases Hospital and Cholera Collection Centre that provide inpatient care to patients with contagious diseases like. cholera, Chicken pox and Measles. During the COVID - 19, Pandemic, the hospital functional as COVID - 19 Health Centre. More than 10,000 patients were effectively treated here during the pandemic.
Pain and Palliative Care Centre for terminally ill cancer patients is present here, that provides hospice care for terminally ill cancer patient. Emergency Care and Recovery Centre has been established as a part of Public private partnership. Orphaned and abounded psychiatric patients are recovered, provided both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment and on recovery they are re-integrated with their family.
The hospital is situated in a green eco-friendly environment, that boasts of more than 3500 shade giving trees, fruit bearing or chased of more than 100 trees, Kitchen garden to provide Organic vegetables for patients. Multiple lawns and gardens are established and maintained to improve the ambience of the hospital.
The hospital has featured many times in mainstream media for its cleanliness and quality of medical care and has recovered multiple awards for its innovative functioning.
AIIMS, Madurai Project Office is running now in hospital premises.
