IOA MADURAI

IOA Madurai is very committed in shaping and transforming the post graduates into able anaesthesiologists. We firmly believe that a good anaesthesiologist has to be sound in his/her knowledge and procedural skills. Inorder to nurture the same in our postgraduates, various academic activities and sessions are being conducted at our institute.

We have about 82 operation theatres and 82 operating tables in total. We perform about 600 cases under general anaesthesia ,1200 cases under regional anaesthesia and assess about 3000 cases per month. We have a well equipped post anaesthesia care unit and take care of the neurosurgical ICU patients as well.

Our department plays a vital role in the state organ donation programme, with hand and gloves involvement and management in brain dead identification, organ protection, organ harvesting and organ donation.

We have an exclusive pain clinic, which takes care of about 350 cases per month and 12 pain relief procedures are being done in a month approximately.

IOA is famous all over the country for its strong and vivid academic sessions. Here are few reasons, why people call it ,"The School Of Anaesthesiology "in a lighter note.

Following are Academics sessions

  1. Lecture classes
Lectures are delivered by the Professors and Assistant professors. A total of six classes spread as two per week are conducted. The content of the class will be predominantly from reference text books like The MILLER'S ANAESTHESIOLOGY.

  2. Case Discussion
One exam case will be discussed every month. The session will be chaired by aProfessors and two assistant professors. Two postgraduates will be presenting the case. Thishelps students to prepare for their VIVA during the final exams.

  3. Symposium
This will be headed by a professor and two assistant professors with one symposium conducted every month. The most important , The mustknows and "ddifficult to understand" topics are chosen and discussed for the benefit of postgraduates.

  4. Guest lectures
As medicine is an intricately woven and overlapping subject, we invite eminent teachers, Professors from other departments. At times NRI speakers and alumni of our institute who are pioneers in various branches of anaesthesia are called upon to enlighten the students. These personalitiesalso inspire postgraduates to push their limits and desire to achieve biggergoals!

  5. Journal club
This meeting is being conducted monthly once. Research papers &recent advances from National and International journals are discussed.

  6. Department ethical committee meeting
This is also held once in a month. Dissertation topics and discussion about the prosand consand the feasibility of the studies are discussed.

  7. Intra departmental Morbidity and mortality audit
It is conducted once in a month. The causes and circumstancial scenarios of morbidity and mortality are thoroughly discussed .

  8. Interesting cases
Interesting cases taken in a month are discussed for the benefit of others so that everyone can further sharpen their knowledge and skills in managing difficult cases.

  9. Bed side clinics
This includes IRCU ward rounds, interaction with postgraduates inside the theatres regarding intraoperative management of cases.

  10. Monthly once Quiz programme
This is conducted to keep the PG's thirst for knowledge alive!

  11. Post duty discussion
On a daily basis, The post duty team is made to discuss their emergency cases and management of the same with their concernedProfessors. This help them to hone their skills in managing emergency cases which are unoptimized and more sick majority of the times.

  12. Coffee break
As per ASA guidelines ,regarding quality monitoring, every anaesthesiologist needs a short mental break during the intraoperative management and monitoring, so that they can concentrate again on the monitors and thus be more vigilant. So,provision of a good drink and snacks will serve the purpose. The coffee club run by the PG's and faculties together, helps this cause.

  13. Log book completion and monthly tests
These are compulsory in the month end. This helps students to develop a routine schedule to complete the allotted test topic and keep their log books up to date.

  14. Conferences
Inaddition to the above mentioned activities students are permitted to attend National,South zone and State conferences. Also every year a CME is conducted and the entire department right from the professor to the student work towards making it a success. In this process students also gain a lot of knowledge regarding the particular topic.

  15. ISA meeting
The students also attend the monthly ISA meetings held.Throught the academic sessions conducted in these meetings, students learn about the recent advances and guidelines in management of various cases.

  16. Appreciation time
Academically ,best performing students are also awarded with medals Every here.

  17. Entertainment
Too much academics and only work without proper breaks will only lead to fatigue. To make sure that doesn't happen, small get togethers to celebrate achievements, victory in competitions are held now and then.
