Legacy of Excellence: The Department of Anatomy, Madurai Medical College
Nestled in the historic city of Madurai, the Madurai Medical College, affiliated with the Government Rajaji hospital. Established in 1954, the college has grown into a prestigious institution, serving over twenty million people through its tertiary care hospital that dates back to 1842.
The Department of Anatomy began its illustrious journey in 1954, the same year the college opened its doors to undergraduate medical education. At the helm was the visionary Dr. Sarah J. Sowri, who not only served as the Professor and Head of the Department but also as the first Principal of the college. Her leadership laid the foundation for academic and anatomical excellence that continues to inspire generations.
In 1970, the department achieved recognition for postgraduate education, marking a significant milestone in its academic expansion. The transformative moment arrived on October 30, 1982, when the department was upgraded to an Institute, with Dr. Muthu appointed as its first Director in 1983. His contributions were immense—he advanced the department’s research facilities and played a pivotal role in the Tamil translation of an anatomy textbook, developed in collaboration with Tamil University, Thanjavur.
The museum, a jewel of the Institute, owes its meticulously curated exhibits to the dedicated work of Dr. Chelvakumaran and Dr. K. Ponnuchamy, whose efforts turned it into an invaluable learning resource. As Dr. Muthu once said, "The true essence of anatomy lies not only in the dissection table but also in how we preserve and present it for generations."
The department has hosted several landmark events in anatomical education. Under the esteemed anatomist Dr. T. S. Ranganathan, author of ‘A Textbook of Human Anatomy’, it conducted the 2nd Annual Conference of the Association of Anatomists of Tamil Nadu. Later, in 1994, the 7th Annual Conference was organized by Dr. Muthumeenakshi Ramanathan, Dr. S. P. Banumathy, and Dr. K. R. Srinivasan, further strengthening its academic presence.
A significant academic initiative was the CME on Human Genetics, conducted in 2001 by Dr. S. P. Banumathy, who also authored the much-referenced Anatomy of the Eye for postgraduates. These events reflect the department’s unwavering commitment to continuing medical education.
Recent years have seen a renaissance of innovation. Under the dynamic leadership of Dr. A. Rathinavel, Dean, and Dr. M. Jeyanthi, Director and Professor (2021–2024), the Institute was renovated in 2022. A state-of-the-art research lab, generously sponsored by the 1984 alumni batch, was inaugurated on May 19, 2022, setting a new benchmark for research in anatomy.
The department has embraced modern technology with enthusiasm. A CME on Artificial Intelligence in Anatomy held on April 17, 2024, showcased its progressive outlook. This was followed by “Neuro Anacon-23”, a hybrid CME on Neural Tube Defects, conducted on October 11, 2024. A cadaveric nasal endoscopic hands-on workshop, held on July 27, 2024, emphasized its commitment to skill-based learning.
Following the retirement of Dr. M. Jeyanthi on April 30, 2024, Dr. K. Parthiban took charge, steering the department forward. On March 12, 2025, Dr. P. G. Ananthi assumed the role of Head of the Department, continuing the tradition of excellence and innovation. Under her leadership, the department has been actively organizing integrated sessions, CME programs, and quizzes, fostering a vibrant academic environment.
As the department moves ahead, it remains deeply rooted in its motto: “To dissect the past, understand the present, and shape the future.” With its rich heritage and forward-thinking approach, the Institute of Anatomy, Madurai Medical College, continues to illuminate the path for aspiring doctors and researchers.
