Department of Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy (DVL)
Madurai Medical College

The Department of DVL at Madurai Medical College is a leading center for comprehensive dermatological care, academics, and advanced procedures, serving patients across South Tamil Nadu.

History

Dermatology services began in the 1960s as an outpatient unit under Dr. G. A. Naidu. A dedicated STD outpatient service was added in the 1970s, and the department evolved into a high-volume referral center, handling up to 1000 OP cases per day.

From the 1970s to 2004, the department played a key role in leprosy care and national control programs, along with undergraduate teaching.

Academic & Clinical Growth

A major milestone was achieved in 2004 with the introduction of MD (DVL) postgraduate training and research under Dr. Syed Maroof.

In 2014, under Dr. A. S. Krishnaram, an Aesthetic and Laser Dermatology Institute was established, bringing advanced procedural dermatology into the government sector.

In 2019, Dermatology and STD services were integrated to form the Department of Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy (DVL).

Present Status

The department functions as a holistic center encompassing:

  • High-volume outpatient and inpatient care

  • Comprehensive STD services, including counselling, treatment, and care for transgender patients

  • Specialized clinics for vitiligo, psoriasis, leprosy, and other dermatoses

  • Advanced procedural dermatology and dermatosurgery, including PRP, grafting, and other surgical interventions

  • Well-equipped laser armamentarium, including pigment lasers, excimer laser, and other aesthetic modalities

  • Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching (5 MD DVL seats per year)

  • Active research and academic programs

  • Hosting of State Dermatology Conferences on two occasions

Vision

To provide integrated dermatological care, education, research, and advanced procedural services with a strong commitment to public health and academic excellence.
