DEPARTMENT OF FORENSIC MEDICINE

               The Department of Forensic Medicine not only deals with the legal aspects of medicine but also medical issues pertaining with law. Thus, helps to aid in the administration of justice. It forms a link between health department, judicial department and police department. So, the police authorities and judicial authorities designate the Head of the Department as “THE DISTRICT POLICE SURGEON”

               Our department is located in the Academic block (Second Floor) in Madurai Medical College Campus. Our department deals with expert medicolegal issues of Government Rajaji Hospital.On a yearly basis we do more than 4000 Post mortem examinations.

COURSE SYLLABUS : AS PER TAMIL NADU DR. M.G.R MEDICAL UNIVERSITY RECOMMENDATIONS

ACADEMIC CALENDAR :

               FOR SECOND YEAR PROF MBBS : 6 hours per month

               FOR THIRD YEAR PROF MBBS :  7 hours per month

               FOR UNDER GRADUATES: Practical sessions aretaken in which the students are taken to mortuary to observe post mortem examinations and practical classes are taken related to medicolegal documentations.

EXAMINATION AND GRADING SYSTEM :

  • Regular symposium, seminar, Internal assessment and viva are conducted to train the future doctors in medicolegal work.
  • Internal assessment conducted at the end of each month and 50 % for qualification.

FOR CRMI : 7 days of posting on rotational basis. During this period they are instructed to assist in all the regular medicolegal works, like Post Mortem examination, sexual offence examination, age estimation and prepare the certificates of these works. The marks for log books are based on their involvements in cases, presentation, knowledge and learning skills.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

  • To do Post Mortem on Medicolegal cases.
  • Issuing Post Mortem Certificates.
  • Collecting the organs and maintaining in the Museum.
  • Maintaining the Medicolegal Records.

MUSEUM WORK

  • Specimens of Medicolegal importance are preserved and mounted in jars with relevant labelling.
  • Enlarged photographs of Forensic importance are preparedin charts and kept for students.
  • Wet specimens of various types of snakes are mounted and displayed with proper label.
  • Various weapons which are commonly used in crime are kept for display.

MORTUARY

            The Mortuary has the cold storage facility of 28 chambers. The dissection hall is well lit with the natural light and a separate room for decomposed cases. The mortuary has five autopsy tables.

RESEARCH AND INNOVATION

RESEARCH PROJECTS :

  1. AN AUTOPSY BASED STUDY ON NATURAL AND UNNATURAL PATTERN OF DEATHS IN CHILDREN UNDER 5 YEARS OF AGE.
  2. PROSPECTIVE STUDY OF SOCIO DEMOGRAPHIC FACTORS OF  SEXUAL OFFENCE ACCUSED IN SEXUAL OFFENCE CASES.
  3. SPECTRUM OF FATAL BULL RELATED INJURIES – AN AUTOPSY BASED STUDY.

  1. PATTERN SEVERITY OF INJURIES SUSTAINED IN ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENT AND AUTOPSY BASED STUDY.
