SHORT HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT:
- Department of General Surgery started functioning from 1957 onwards.
- So far 25 Professors worked as Head of Departments.
- The Department consists of seven Units with Eight Professors, One Associate Professor, and 24 Assistant Professors.
- It is a Postgraduate Department and every year 25 MS (General Surgery- 3 years course) Postgraduates were selected through All India /State Quota totally 75 postgraduates undergoing training in this Department.
- Nearly 250 MBBS Undergraduates, 150 CRRIs and 30 Theatre Technician students (Paramedical Certified course) are undergoing training in this Department.
- Department of General surgery is organizing Annual CME for Undergraduates for the past 30 years.
- For the past 42 years the Department of General Surgery is organizing Annual CME (3 days) Programme accredited by the Tamilnadu Dr.MGR Medical University, which is popular among the Postgraduates and young Surgeons from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Pondicherry, Maharashtra etc.
- The Department is also conducting Live Surgery workshop with eminent Professors and Surgeons.
- The Department is organizing Surgeons Meet, PG Symposium, Journal Club Meeting every month for Postgraduates and Trauma Life Support Training for CRRIs.
- Special Clinics like, Breast OP, Surgical Endocrinology, and Diabetic foot are conducted by the Department.

- Surgical advanced skill teaching for PG's including laparoscopic surgical skills.
FUTURE PROPOSALS:
- To introduce endoscopic training both Upper GI Scopy & Lower GI Scopy for PG's.
