Our Blood Bank was started  in the year 1969 to  save many lives from loss of blood.

In 1970 Blood Donors Club was inaugurated by the great efforts of  Dr.S.A.Kabir, the Dean of Govt Rajaji Hospital & Madurai Medical College & his team Dr.T.Durairaj (First Staff Advisor),  Dr.T.Chellaiah( Staff advisor ),  Dr.G.Bhaskaran ( First Secretary ) and the students of  Madurai Medical College. 

 In 1970, 21 voluntary donors had initiated blood donation & in 2022  it has crossed 27,640 units .

 In 1983, obtaining blood from Professional donors was completely stopped by the reckless efforts of BDC.

In 1996, Blood component separation unit was started. We are separating  99% of Whole blood  into Blood components  like Packed cells ,Fresh frozen plasma, and Platelets successfully.

 In 2007, Honorable MP Mr.Mohan,  had donated Mobile Blood collecting van.

 In 2011, NACO  had supplied  Mobile Blood Collection Bus at the cost of 1.5crores,  which helped us to conduct Mobile  blood  donation camps at door steps of   Voluntary  blood donors in various districts of South TamilNadu.

In 2016,Walk in chamber has been installed at the cost of 8lakhs, which enhanced our storage capacity to 3000 units.

In 2018, Apheresis unit was started.

In 2019 Blood Bank surface area has been upgraded from 7713sq.ft to 15,426sq.ft.

 In 2020, our Blood Bank had been upgraded into “Department of Immuno Hematology and Blood Transfusion” with sanctioning of 2 PG seats every year.

In 2020, Convalescent Plasma Therapy Unit  has been started.

In  2022, RFID system has been installed.

In 2023, Automated Immuno Hematology Analyser has been installed at the cost of 1crore. 

We have 9 storage centres. Blood and Blood components from our Blood Bank is supplied to 8 PHCs ,3 GHs in Madurai district and nearby  Govt Medical Colleges.

We have issued 9000 units of  FFP to various  Govt Medical College Hospitals in Tamilnadu .

 We have issued 17,819 units to our Hospital,7667 units to TCC , 1127 blood units to nearby PHCs and Taluk Hospitals in Madurai district in the year 2022.

We have identified 25 Patients & 4 donors Of Rare BOMBAY BLOOD GROUP.We have issued  19 units to BOMBAY group patients ,2 units to Pudukottai Medical College.
