- Department of Medical Oncology in Madurai Medical College was started by Prof. Muthukumarasamy in 08.06.1990.
- Every year an average of 3000 newly diagnosed cancer patients are registered in our department for treatment and around 26000 cancer outpatients are seen every year.
- All chemotherapeutic drugs which are very costly are provided free of cost with the help of CMCHIS both as day care and as in patients.
- This is the referral center for districts of Southern Tamil Nadu and we have patients travelling more than 300kms to get treatment in our hospital.
- People from neighbouring states also prefer to get treatment in our department due to holistic care and cost effectiveness.. We are also treating hematological and pediatric malignancies which can have various treatment challenges in its course.
- Palliative care is given to all terminally ill patients with the availability of narcotic drugs and proper prescription forms.
- In 2019, Higher Specialty Course, DM Medical Oncology was started in Madurai Medical College by Prof. Dr.P.N. RAJASEKARAN. DM.
- Every year cancer awareness programs and cancer survivor programs are conducted from our department.
- Our department has been conducting various Research activities in association with Medical Research Unit of Madurai Medical College.
- We have shown consistent improvement in our performance over the years in terms of patient care and also in academics.
