About Us

The Department of Microbiology at Madurai Medical College, Madurai, was established in 1956 and was subsequently upgraded as the Institute of Microbiology in 1991. Since its inception, the institute has played a vital role in academic excellence, diagnostic services, research, and training in the field of microbiology.

The institute initially had a separate unit for viral diagnosis, including viral culture and viral serology testing laboratories, which functioned until 2010. This unit was later upgraded into a molecular laboratory, enabling advanced molecular diagnostic testing and research.

The institute also functions as an Intermediate Reference Laboratory (IRL) for Tuberculosis diagnosis, catering to the 10 southern districts of Tamil Nadu, thereby supporting regional public health services and disease surveillance.

An exclusive HIV diagnostic laboratory is also available, providing CD4 testing and HIV viral load analysis, contributing significantly to improving the quality of life for PLHA (People Living with HIV/AIDS) patients.
