Neonatology is a rare super specialty taking care of Newborn babies up to 1 month of age. Our college is one of the very few colleges having this specialty department running DM Neonatology course in the country. Our department is the second next to ICH, Chennai having a separate Neonatology specialty department in the state.

Land mark evens

  • 2011 – 1’st batch of DM Course started.
  • 2015– Dept Shifted to new CEM’ONC building.
  • 2018 – Tamilnadu government order given for separate department status.
  • 2023– Separate New extramural unit officially sanctioned and started.

 

Highlights

  • Department of Neonatology is the Largest Neonatal referral hospital in south Tamil Nadu. We have both intramural and separate extramural units taking care of inborn and outborn neonates respectively. Our department is instrumental in reducing the neonatal mortality rate in Madurai and near by districts. Over these years we are able to save 500 additional neonatal lives annually.
  • We have state of the art Advanced facilities like high-frequency ventilation, inhaled nitric oxide therapy, Therapeutic hypothermia(cooling), bed side ultrasound, bed side echo, X-ray, bed side ECG, ABG facilities and also facilities for invasive BP monitoring, ETCO2 monitoring.
  • Our department is having the one and only human milk bank in the district.
  • Currently we have 3 DM Superspeciality faculties and 4 specialist pediatricians trained in NICU care. We also have 3 DM postgraduates 9 MD Postgraduates and CRRI’s under going training at posted our department.
  • So far 10 batches of DM Neonatology students have passed from our department and now serving in different parts of the country.

Services:

Our Department is a very large Department with an average census of 160 neonates /day. We are taking care of 13000 to 15000 born neonates in Govt Rajaji Hospital, Madurai. Annually we treat 5683 admitted neonates and cater to about 3912 OPD neonates. We provide

  • 24-hour casualty facilities
  • 24-hour resuscitation facilities for inborn neonates at birth.

Monthly Academic Forum

Academic Accolades

  • Our institution is the regional nodal center for newborn resuscitation training of medical officers under NSSK scheme. Also, Our department is the regional nodal center for RBSK training for staff nurses and ANM’s.

  • We have initiated and conducting national newborn week celebrations annually with CMEs, workshops, NRP programs, and quiz programs during November every year.

  • Our DM Pg Dr. K. Gayathri – got Dr. T. RAJAGOPAL AWARD Paper – at (Kodai Pedicon - 2022).

  • Our DM Pg Dr. C. Mary Reena - got 1’st Prize for her Poster presentation at - South Neocon Trichy. (2022).

  • Also, Dr. C. Mary got - 1’st Prize in Breastfeeding quiz conducted at South Neocon Trichy. (2022).

  • 3.10 research posters were presented on neonatal topics by MBBS students at National New Born Week (Nov-2022), at GRH, Madurai.
