Starting of the Department
The Department of Neurology at Government Rajaji Hospital and Madurai Medical College was established in 1970 by Prof. Dr. K. Srinivasan. Over the decades, the department has played a vital role in delivering advanced neurological care to the population of southern Tamil Nadu while maintaining excellence in teaching and research. The department celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2020, marking more than five decades of service in neurology.
Under the dynamic leadership of Prof. Dr. P. K. Murugan, Professor & Head of the Department, the department has witnessed remarkable growth and academic advancement. Since 2019, the number of postgraduate seats has increased from two to five, reflecting the department’s expanding academic strength and commitment to training excellence.
The Golden Jubilee celebrations (1970–2020) were conducted in a grand manner, marking fifty years of dedicated neurological service and education.
The department has made significant strides in Interventional Neurology, with neurointervention services initiated in the Biplane Cath Lab and the successful completion of the first Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) procedure. Faculty members and postgraduate trainees were deputed to the Department of Cardiology and Kalaignar Centenary Hospital, Chennai, for specialized training in neurointervention, further strengthening clinical expertise.
Academic and public health initiatives have also flourished, including the World Stroke Day awareness rally conducted in October 2025. Specialized CMEs on Botulinum toxin intervention and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) with live demonstrations were organized, providing valuable academic exposure. A Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) workshop was also successfully conducted in July 2025 to enhance expertise in advanced movement disorder management.

Neurointervention – Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) and Botulinum Toxin Therapy
The department routinely performs Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) and Electromyography (EMG) to evaluate patients presenting with weakness, numbness, or neuropathies. These investigations help in identifying nerve and muscle involvement and aid in early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, especially for conditions such as diabetic neuropathy, Guillain–Barré syndrome, and motor neuron diseases.
The Electroencephalography (EEG) service plays an essential role in evaluating epilepsy, encephalopathy, and critically ill patients by assessing real-time brain electrical activity.
Advanced auditory and vestibular tests such as Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials (BERA) help assess hearing pathways and brainstem function, especially in children, stroke patients, and those with demyelinating disorders.
Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials (VEMP) help evaluate balance pathways and inner ear function, aiding accurate diagnosis of vertigo and dizziness.
These diagnostic services are complemented by a strong neuro-physiotherapy and rehabilitation program focused on early mobilization, functional recovery, and improving the quality of life through a multidisciplinary approach.
The department is equipped with comprehensive neurodiagnostic and therapeutic facilities including NCS, EMG, VEMP, BERA, Polysomnography, EEG, Video EEG Monitoring, and Transcranial Doppler (TCD) along with a dedicated Stroke Unit and advanced Neurointervention services such as DSA and Botulinum toxin therapy.
