- The first HOD was Dr.M.N. Gurusamy MBBS, MS. Followed by Dr.Lalitha Kameshwaran MBBS., PhD. The first Director of Institute of Pharmacology was Dr.P.Narasimman MBBS, MSc followed by Dr. Vembar MBBS, MSc. The Institute is also recognized for PhD course.

RESOURCES OF THE DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACOLOGY
The Department of Pharmacology is equipped with comprehensive and modern resources that support excellence in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research, and rational therapeutics, in accordance with the guidelines of the National Medical Commission (NMC).
1. Infrastructure and Teaching Facilities
The department houses well-ventilated, fully furnished lecture halls equipped with modern audio-visual teaching aids, including LCD projectors, 4 demo halls, smart boards, and digital learning systems. Dedicated practical laboratories support competency-based medical education (CBME), ensuring interactive, skill-oriented, and student-centric learning.
2. Experimental Pharmacology Laboratory, Central Animal House & Zebrafish Research Facility
The Experimental Pharmacology Laboratory is equipped with advanced simulation software and Computer-Assisted Learning (CAL) modules to enhance practical training and understanding.
The department is supported by a Committee for Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CCSEA)-compliant Animal House Facility, housing both small animals and large animal models, including pigs, for translational research. All experimental protocols are conducted under Institutional Animal Ethics Committee (IAEC) approval, ensuring strict adherence to ethical standards.
A dedicated Zebrafish (Danio rerio) Research Facility enables drug screening, toxicity studies, and developmental pharmacology research, promoting ethical experimentation based on the principles of the 5Rs:

The department uniquely integrates small animal, large animal (porcine), and zebrafish systems within a unified translational research framework.
3. Clinical Pharmacology and Skill Development Unit
The Clinical Pharmacology Unit has been recently approved, and a dedicated space has been allocated for its functioning. Procurement of essential equipment and infrastructure is currently in progress.
It is planned to be integrated with clinical departments to facilitate bedside learning and strengthen rational therapeutics training.
4. Pharmacovigilance Unit
The Pharmacovigilance Unit functions under the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI) and is supported by a Central Government-appointed Pharmacovigilance Associate.
