The Department of Urology at Madurai Medical College was first conceptualized in 1973 by Dr. Subbaiah Natarajan, who had received advanced training in Australia following his Master’s degree in General Surgery. Initially, the Urology Unit functioned as a division within the Department of General Surgery under the leadership of Prof. K. N. Vasudevan, then Head of the Department.

Dr. Subbaiah Natarajan gradually developed the unit into an independent specialty, leading to the formal establishment of the Department of Urology and Nephrology. At that time, nephrology was not recognized as a separate specialty, and the department also undertook considerable peritoneal dialysis in addition to urological surgeries. The unit operated from a modest ward complex, providing dedicated care until 1977.

Following him, Dr. C. L. Ashokkumar, the institution’s first M.Ch.-qualified urologist, was appointed as Professor of Urology. In 1984, Dr. S. Varadarajan assumed charge and led the department into a new phase by initiating live donor renal transplantation. This pioneering effort was carried out under considerable challenges, given the absence of established protocols or regulatory frameworks such as the Human Organ Transplant Act (HOTA). Between 1984 and 1994, Dr. Varadarajan successfully performed nine live donor renal transplants. By 2005, the department had completed a total of 25 renal transplantations, establishing a solid foundation for transplant urology in Southern Tamil Nadu.

In the subsequent years, the department further expanded its capabilities, thanks to the contributions of Prof. Dr. N. Vijayasankaran, MS., M.Ch., and other senior urologists. Cadaveric renal transplantation was started in 2015.

A significant academic milestone was achieved with the launch of the M.Ch. Super-specialty course in Urology in 2019, admitting four students annually, through the efforts of Prof. Dr. Raja, M.Ch. This marked the department’s transformation into a center of advanced surgical training, research, and excellence in patient care.

At present, Prof. T. Gnanasekaran, M.Ch. (Urology), has further elevated the Department of Urology into a pioneering tertiary care institute with advanced instruments and infrastructure. All modalities of stone surgeries, including URS, RIRS, PCNL, ESWL, and Mini PCNL, are available, catering to the needs of South Tamil Nadu.

Laparoscopic procedures for renal, bladder, and prostate diseases and malignancies are available to economically disadvantaged patients. Reconstructive urological procedures such as BMG urethroplasty for stricture urethra and urogynecological procedures are regularly performed. Continuous live and cadaveric renal transplants in the department earned the “First in the State Award” for the year 2023–24 and “Second in the State Award” for the year 2024–25.

The Department of Urology has sincere and dedicated teaching faculty, which has made Madurai Medical College the preferred institution for the M.Ch. Urology Super-specialty course among urology aspirants.
